Whisp is a macOS app that turns selected text, screenshots, and coding-agent output into spoken summaries. It is operated by Bishal Banerjee. This page explains what the app and website handle in plain language. The short version: your content is sent away only when it needs to be processed, we do not store that content on our servers, and your history stays on your Mac. We do not sell your data.
What we collect
- Dictation audio and transcripts. When you use dictation, microphone audio is sent over an encrypted connection through our backend proxy to the transcription provider. We do not store that audio or transcript on our servers. The resulting transcript and the name of the destination app are saved locally on your Mac so the dictation remains searchable in Whisp. You can delete it from Notes.
- Account information. Clerk handles sign-in by email. Clerk gives us the basic account details you choose to share, such as your email address, name, and profile image. We use them to identify your account and team membership.
- Selected text and screenshots. When you ask Whisp to process something, the selected text or screenshot is sent over an encrypted connection to our backend proxy and then to the provider needed for that request. We do not store the text or screenshot on our servers. Your screenshots, summaries, history, and audio are stored locally on your Mac and can be cleared in the app.
- Usage metadata. We record per-request metering (timestamps, model used, token counts, and processing cost) so the service can track usage and cost. This metadata does not include your selected text, screenshots, summaries, audio, or future call transcripts.
- Listen on phone. Whisp never uploads narration audio automatically. When you explicitly choose Listen on phone, Whisp temporarily uploads only the generated narration audio—not selected text, summary text, transcripts, screenshots, filenames, URLs, or microphone recordings. The private link works only for the same signed-in Whisp account, can be claimed once, and expires after ten minutes.
- Optional product analytics. Agent-continuity analytics are off by default. If you enable Help improve agent continuity in Agents settings, the app sends content-free events such as whether an offer was shown, played, replaced or expired; whether Reply was opened or submitted; completion status; timing buckets; app version; and agent type. These events never include project names, file paths, prompts, selected text, replies, agent output, session identifiers, or raw error messages. You can turn this setting off again at any time.
- Payments. Billing is not live today. We plan to use Razorpay for payments in India. When billing launches, Razorpay will handle payment details; Whisp will not store your card information.
Where processing happens
Clerk handles authentication. Our backend proxy relays summary requests through OpenRouter, which can route them to Google Gemini models, xAI Grok, or OpenAI. Cartesia handles voice synthesis when you use a Cartesia voice. Razorpay will handle payments in India once billing is live. Each service receives only what it needs for the request.
Calls
During a call, Whisp sends microphone audio to the transcription provider through the same backend proxy. The running transcript will be kept in memory only and discarded when the call ends. One text recap will be saved locally on your Mac; the microphone audio and transcript will not be stored on our servers.
Retention
We keep account records and usage metadata while your account is active. Selected text, screenshots, summaries, dictation audio, dictation transcripts, and call transcripts are not kept on our servers. Generated narration explicitly sent with Listen on phone is deleted after ten minutes or when you revoke it. Local history, audio, screenshots, summaries, dictation transcripts, and call recaps stay on your Mac until you remove them.
Closing your account
Account closure is a soft-delete. Your old server-side account and usage records become orphaned and unreachable from the app, rather than being physically erased immediately. You can later register with the same email address and receive a fresh account that is not connected to the old one. Closing an account does not remove files already stored locally on your Mac; clear those in the app if you want to remove them too.

Security
All transport is encrypted (TLS). API credentials for model providers are held server-side and are never distributed inside the app.
Children
Whisp is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
