Wisper Back vs the dictation built into macOS

Your Mac already dictates, for free, with no time limit. If it’s doing the job, keep using it. Here’s what changes when you add Wisper Back.

Checked 4 October 2026 · macOS 14+ · Apple silicon · Free to start

Pick macOS Dictation if you want free, built in and nothing to install, and you don’t mind tidying up after.

Pick Wisper Back if you want the ums gone, lists and numbers formatted, and names spelled right without fixing them.

How it works

  1. Talk like you talk.Ums, restarts, “eight” for 8. Say it the way it comes out; you don’t have to speak like a robot.
  2. It cleans up as you go.Fillers drop out, numbers and names come out right, and the punctuation lands where you’d put it.
  3. It lands where you’re typing.Mail, Slack, your editor, a browser tab: whatever had the cursor gets the finished words.

macOS types what you say, word for word. This is what Wisper Back does with the same words.

Where macOS Dictation wins

  • It’s free, already installed, and on every Mac, iPhone and iPad.
  • Many more languages.
  • No account, nothing to download.

Where Wisper Back wins

  • Ums, uhs and false starts drop out.
  • Lists, numbers and “scratch that” just work.
  • Names come out the way your screen spells them, and fixes are remembered.
  • Email, chat and code each get the right shape.
  • It reads text back to you, too. Narration.

Mac dictation not working?

Try these, in order, before you install anything.

  1. Check it’s on

System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. Turn it off and on again if it’s already on.

  2. Check the microphone

In the same place, pick the right microphone source. A headset or display mic is often chosen by mistake.

  3. Check the shortcut

Look at the Dictation shortcut in Keyboard settings, and make sure no other app (Wisper Back included) uses the same key.

  4. Check the language

Dictation listens for the languages listed in Keyboard → Dictation. Add yours if it’s missing.

  5. Restart

If it still won’t start, restart your Mac. It fixes more dictation problems than it should.

Questions

Is Mac dictation private?

When Keyboard settings say dictation is processed on your device, Apple says the audio isn’t sent to its servers. Wisper Back sends nothing while you’re offline; the privacy policy says what is sent when you’re online.

Can I use both?

Yes. Give them different shortcuts. Wisper Back uses fn by default.

Does Mac dictation have a time limit?

No. Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout. Neither does Wisper Back.

Is it free?

Free to download and free to start. The Free plan has dictation, narration in the standard voice and 30 minutes of meetings a month. Every new account gets a free week of Pro, no card needed. Pro adds unlimited dictation with the best accuracy and hours of natural voices; plans are in the app.

Mic off

Hold it. That’s the only way the mic turns on.

  • The microphone opens only while you talk or record a meeting.
  • Your history stays on your Mac.
  • What you send to be read aloud isn’t kept.
