Dictation for Mac that writes like you type
Hold fn and talk. Let go, and clean text lands where your cursor is, in any app: no ums, numbers as numbers, names spelled the way your screen shows them.
How it works
- Talk like you talk.Ums, restarts, “eight” for 8. Say it the way it comes out; you don’t have to speak like a robot.
- It cleans up as you go.Fillers drop out, numbers and names come out right, and the punctuation lands where you’d put it.
- It lands where you’re typing.Mail, Slack, your editor, a browser tab: whatever had the cursor gets the finished words.

Right shape for every app
Emails get their greeting on its own line. A one-line chat loses its full stop. In Codex or Claude, file names go in backticks. In a terminal, you get exactly what you said.
Quick update: the auth flow is done. @Priya should review it before standup.

Works where you type
Mail, Slack, WhatsApp, Notion, Google Docs, a browser text box, your terminal. If there’s a cursor, you can dictate there.
Hold fn while you talk, or press fn Space to go hands-free and again to finish. While you speak, the notch shows where the words are headed: an envelope for email, a bubble for chat, brackets for code.
Learns your words
Fix a misheard name once, right after dictating, and it’s spelled right next time, everywhere. Names and terms on your screen are spelled the way the screen shows them, so “Prajjwal” and “RE-727” come out right the first time.
Teams can share a vocabulary: one person adds a product name, everyone’s dictation gets it.
Keeps working offline
Lose the Wi-Fi and English dictation keeps going: the words, the cleanup, your vocabulary and styles. Nothing leaves your Mac while you’re offline, and there’s nothing to set up.
Other languages need an internet connection. What works offline.
A few more things
- Select text, press ⌃⌘E and say how to change it: “make it friendlier”, “in Hindi”.
- ⌃⌘V pastes your last dictation again.
- Knock twice on the palm rest to start (off until you turn it on).
- Dictation stays on your Mac in History, with “Save to Notes”.
Questions
Which languages can I dictate in?
Thirteen: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Arabic. Or leave it on Auto.
Does it work offline?
Yes, in English. Dictation keeps working when you’re offline, with nothing to set up. Offline dictation.
Is it free?
Free to download and free to start. The Free plan has dictation, narration in the standard voice and 30 minutes of meetings a month. Every new account gets a free week of Pro, no card needed. Pro adds unlimited dictation with the best accuracy and hours of natural voices; plans are in the app.
How is it different from the dictation built into macOS?
macOS types what you say, word for word, for free. Wisper Back removes fillers and false starts, formats lists and numbers, learns your words and shapes the text for the app. The full comparison.
Does it work in Cursor, VS Code or the terminal?
Yes. In coding agents, file names, paths and flags land in backticks. In a terminal, what you say is typed as-is, on one line.
Which Macs does it run on?
Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later) on macOS 14 or newer. There is no Windows, iPhone or Android app.
Nothing listens
until you hold fn.
Hold it. That’s the only way the mic turns on.
- The microphone opens only while you talk or record a meeting.
- Your history stays on your Mac.
- What you send to be read aloud isn’t kept.
Free to start. Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 14 or later.
